U.S.A. TARIFF PASSED
NARROW MARGIN IN SENATE VOTE IMPORT DUTIES RAISED United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright Reed 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, Fri. After discussions beginning on January 7, the 1929 Senate today passed through its final stage the conference report on the tariff measure. The approval of the House of Representatives is expected shortly. A very bitter debate marked the last fortnight. The Senate session's party lines were broken. The Republican farm block members joined with the Democrats in denouncing the measure, and the division was so close that at first it was expected the vicePresidential vote of Senator Curtis would be necessary. The announcement of Senator Reed of Pennsylvania, however, that after long meditation he would vote for the measure, enabled its passage by 44 to 42. Financiers, hankers and businessmen who were taking opposite sides of the question, in the last week bombarded Congress with requests to pass or defeat the measure. It is understood that the only omission is the export debenture provision and the inclusion of a flexible provision will prevent a veto by President Hoover. The conference reports to raise the existing import duties generally 6 per cent to 20 per cent. The House will vote on Saturday and a rapid affirmative action is expected.
