HOME GROUPS COMPROMISE IN THE PROVINCES NORTHCLIFFES AND BERRYS LONDON, Friday. The provincial newspaper war between the Northcliffe and the Berry groups has ended. The Northcliffe interests have agreed not to publish in Cardiff, Sheffield and Aberdeen, and •:he Berry group will take over the buildings which its rivals have erected. The rivalry between the rival Northcliffe and Berry interests in England has been exceptionally keen. The Northcliffe newspapers include the "Daily Mail” and the “Evening News,” the head of the company being Lord Rothermere, a brother of the late Lord Northcliffe. The Berry group own Allied Newspapers, Limited, which publish many newspapers in London and the provinces, the chairman being Sir Gomer Berry. Many newspapers in London and the provinces have been acquired by one or the other, and new provincial newspapers started. The Berry group acquired the Hulton Manchester papers for £5,500,000, the Associated Scottish Newspapers Company for £1,050,000. the “Financial Times” and over 25 other journals.
