TEACHERS’ PROBLEMS
POSITION OF MARRIED WOMEN CAPITATION ALLOWANCES Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. “Financial stringency” was the reason given by the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, for his inability to increase the capitation allowances to school committees, in a letter to the local association. Nevertheless the recipients were not satisfied and decided to send a deputation to the Government. M The . chairman . suggesred an increase in the amusement tax and another that they should keep on hammering at the authorities. The association also had a lively debate on the question of married women teachers. One member called it a crying shame to see married women with husbands in good positions keeping other teachers out of a job. Another said he knew of a case where a woman was teaching whose husband had £5,000 a year, but he thought it must be a case of love of children. Eventually a motion was carried that when married women resigned single teachers should be appointed.
