DRINKS AFTER HOURS
PUBLICAN FINED £5 PENALTIES FOR CUSTOMERS From Our Own Correspondent PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. A visit by the police to the Patumahoe Hotel on' the evffning of May 9 led to the licensee and seven others being prosecuted in the Pukekohe Court today. Adolphus Parris, the licensee, pleaded guilty to a charge of selling liquor after hours. Sergeant J. T. Cowan said that when the police visited the premises at 10 p.m. the front door was open and the door into the office ajar. In the room there were seven men. There was liquor on the table and mantelpiece, glasses on the slide into the bar, in which Parris was standing, and 4s 6d in silver. For the defence, Mr. E. G. Foster said there were peculiar circumstances which he was unable to go into as it involved other names. The position in country hotels was difficult inasmuch as the licensee often had visitors. Parris had not been convicted during the past two years, and had conducted the hotel well since then. “If he comes here again he will know what to expect,” said Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in fining Parris £5. G. Green, W. Green, B. Hawkins, W. Hunter, W. K. Irwin, G. Torkar and C. Sheppard were each fined £1 with 12s costs, for being found on the premises after closing hours.
