Grafton B, No. 10. TAURANGA TOURNEY From Our Own Correspondent TAURANGA, Tuesday. The Hockey Club tourney today was very successful. Visiting teams from Auckland University, Whakatane and Waihi took part in the game. The matches resulted:—Women: Tauranga 3, Waihi 0. Men: Whakatane 0, Tauranga 0; Tauranga 3, Auckland University, 0. TAURANGA SEASON CLOSED From Our Own Correspondent TAURANGA, Tuesday. The Tauranga Bowling Club closed the season with an all-day tournament. There were players from the Matamata and Tauranga South Clubs. Six games were played, the winners being Messrs. Crowley (skips), Mearns (leads). MATCHES AT ROTORUA From Our Own Correspondent ROTORUA, Wednesday. There was a good attendance at Arawa Paark yesterday to witness the programme provided by the Rugby Union. The Morrinsville representative team defeated Rotorua by 8 points to 3. In the junior game the representatives proved too strong for the High School, defeating it by 27 points to 6. THAMES DEFEATED TAURANGA’S FINE BACK PLAY From Our Own Correspondent THAMES, Tuesday. Thames was “at home” to Tauranga Rugby teams on the King’s Birthday. Out of five representative games, the home sides won all but the senior. The Thames primary schools defeated Tauranga schools by 9 to 3: the Thames High School A team was far too good for Tauranga High School, the scores being 25 to 6; the High School seconds also had a victory by five points to nil; and the Thames juniors won by 16 to 6. Tho senior game was a different tale. The Tauranga back division cut the defence to ribbons. Had it not been for the stubborn work of the Thames pack, the score would have been much higher than the 16 to 11, at which the game ended. Turner, the Tauranga second fiveeighth, and the New Zealand sculling champion, has both pace and weight, and his side-step secured two beautiful tries in which he made Harrison, the Thames centre-threequarter, look like a novice. FAST BACK PLAY The Tauranga backs were speedy and whipped the ball out to their wings. Only sound tackling by Moran and Leo White saved Thames again and again. In the centre, Wells was the only back willing to do any rushstopping. He flung himself at the feet of the opposing pack a dozen

times. Charlie Cameron had a day off and Harrison played a “shining” game. Buchan, the Thames fullback, was much overshadowed by his vis-a-vis, Bell, who played an extremely safe and heady game. BEATEN FOR BALL

One of the most surprising features of the game was that Thames, with ex-All Black hooker Lomas, and W. Percy in the front row, were consistently beaten for the ball in the scrums. Playing in the unfamiliar position of rover, Strange did not make a success of the job. Brunton, Clark and W. Percy and George Pollock were the pick of the local pack, Clark, in particular, being the leader of the bulk of the rushes. Robson was not a success as lock, and Lomas had a day off.

For Tauranga Bell and Turner were outstanding, while Ainsley and Mirrilees played useful games. If today’s game is anything to go by Thames is woefully weak in the backs, but has a fine, bustling pack available. The scorers were: Lomas and Harrison, tries for Thames; R. Buchan, a penalty goal and a conversion: Tauranga, Turner two tries, Tassell a try, Mirrilees a try, Ainsley two conversions. One incident of the junior representative game is worth recording. McMillan, the Thames wing-three-quarter, received a ten yards from his own line and raced the whole length of the field with both teams in full cry to score between the posts. It was the most spectacular try seen at Rhodes Park this year. The scorers were: Thames, McMillan two tries, Morganfone try, Lefeure one try, Graharrt two conversions (16 points); Tauranga, McLeod one try, Douglas penalty goal (6 points). CONTROL OF THE GAME “Rugby Student” writes: “With the visit of the British Rugby •team (and. incidentally, of Mr. James Baxter), the position of New Zealand in the Rugby world has been brought very much to the fore. Here we stand, with all our innovations and grievances" —dispensations of rules, such as the kicking into touch rule, etc.—and that question which Mr. Baxter has declined to discuss, namely, representation on the International Board, though his reticence does not extend to other football topics. Still, as regards the dispensations, these do not affect visiting teams, as they are naturally dropped. “The crux of the whole matter is the wing-forward. I am not inclined to argue on the merits or demerits of this much-discussed player (or his not-so-much discussed near relative, the “winging forward”), though as regards the term “spoiler” so often applied to him. I consider that any person who believed attack to be the best defence must necessarily be a spoiler—of the other fellow’s intentions. Is not that the game? Think how many beautiful battles Napoleon must have spoiled, and how many boxing matches Jack Dempsey so callously ruined. “However, apart from this, we are apparently required to acquiesce in the enforcement of controversial readings of rules, for example, as in the case of the rule limiting a team to 15 players, where it is contended that this prohibits the replacement of injured players. But when, in addition, we are to have foisted on us a custom (and a by no means universal custom) of remaining on the field at half-time, the time has come for Mew Zealand to set about getting matters put on a fair and equitable basis. One needs only to call to mind that classic event, the third test against the Springboks, to gain an idea what a ridiculous situation this custom involves. Till all these matters are

settled by a conference, such as was intended to be held during the present tour, New Zealand footballers must be prepared to play under the other fellow’s interpretations, whether at home or abroad, to their continual disadvantage. The New Zealand football public, for its part, must be prepared to face the humiliating experiences of our referees being lectured and dictated to. and the opinions of respected Rugby officials peremptorily dismissed by visitors whose flow of eloquence is equalled apparently only by their insistence that only their opinions can be justified.”
