“NOT GUILTY”
GASSED MAN’S TRAGIC MESSAGE DEAD IN EMPTY HOUSE As a result of allegations made by neighbours aga.nst William Patrick Lennox. Detective Allsopp and Constable Woods called at his house. 5 Sanders Avenue, Takapuna, yesterday. Looking through a window, they saw Lennox's body lying on the scullery floor. On an envelope left on the table, were scrawled the words, “Not guilty.’* An inquest was opened before the Coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt S.M., this morning and adjourned sine die. Evidence of identification was given by Constable Woods. Lennox was a labourer aged about 50. witness said. He was living apart from his wife and occupied the house, at 5 Sanders Avenue, alone. According to the police statement, the neighbours called to see Lennox in regard to allegations made against him. They found the house locked and the blinds down. There was a strong smell of gas. When the police officers arrived about noon, they found Lennox lying dead on the floor with his head in the gas oven. Apart from the scrawled “Not guilty” on the envelope, there was no evidence found in the house cf assistance to the police. . The police said this morning that Lenox’s wife was thought to be in the South Island.
