FINAL LEAGUE TRIAL

NORTH ISLAND TEAM SELECTED FIVE WAIKATO MEN Tho secretary of the council of the New Zealand Rugby Football League, Mr. W. O. Carlaw. this afternoon announced the following team to represent the North Island against the Souta Island at Carlaw Park on Saturday week next, Juno 14: — FULLBACK C. Dufty (Auckland). THREEQUARTERS G. Perry (Auckland), H. Brisbane land). G. Tittleton (South Auckland*. FIVE-EIGHTHS E. Meyer (Northland). M. Wethertll (Auckland). HALFBACK W. Shortland (Auckland) FORWARDS Front Row. —R. Trau Wetter (South Auckland), hooker, R. Stephenson (Soutu Auckland), J. Menzies (South Auckland >. Side Row.—B. Clark (Auckland —City Club), T. Timms tSouth Auckland). Breakaway.—A. Clarke (Auckland —Marust Club). Reserves. Forward: J. O'Brien (Auckland); back, L. Abbott (South Auckland)* The team was selected by the North Island selector, Mr. E. K. Asher (Auckland), and in accordance with the decision of the New Zealand council was submitted to the scrutiny’ of that body before being released for the Press. Seven of the 13 chosen are Aucklanders, five South Aucklanders and one a Northland player. It can be said that there is really no surprise exclusion or inclusion. It is known that C. E. Gregory (Auckland — Marist Club) is not available for tho Australian trip, and he has not. as yet, played in any of the representative matches this season. HALFBACK POSITION On Saturday’s form there was only one man in the running for the fullback position. nd that man was Dufty (Auckland). Tittleton, the brilliant South Auckland winger, simply played himself int:> the side on Saturday's form, and tho same applies to “Eddie” Meyer (Northland), who played a great gamo at Auckland a fortnight ago. Perry (Auckland) has also justified his inclusion. He is a threequarter of distinct promise. There may be some difference of opinion over the halfback position. many being of the opinion on Saturday that the South Aucklander. Abbott, was worthy of consideration before Shortland (Auckland). but there is no denying that the Maori is a very solid type of player. Four of the Waikato’s hot pack of forwards have gained places. Stephenson, Trautvetter und Menzies present a truly formidable front line. Clark, the City player, has been in great form of late, although his game on Saturday was probably not the best he has played this season. Clark© (Marist), in tho breakaway position, is a player whose abilities are well known. The match on Saturday week. North Island v. South Island, is the final and most important trial of the series on which the personnel of the New Zealand team to tour Australia will depend. The League “Ail Blacks” will leave Auckland for Sydney on June 27.
