GIRL TAKES ON CAREER OF CRIME YOUNG MEN PAY PENALTY Wanted by the police in connection with a series of burglaries in and around Christchurch, William Porter and Leslie Charles Burke left for the North, taking with them a young girl. As the result of further exploits in Wellington and Palmerston North they appeared at the Police Court this morning. The pair was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, to be followed by 12 months’ reformative detention. Porter and Burke, both labourers, aged 22, admitted obtaining money by valueless cheques in Wellington. Porter pleaded guilty to converting to his own use a car valued at £IOO, and obtaining money by a valueless cheque at Palmerston North. Chief-Detective Hammond said the accused had brought their chequebook with them when they left for Wellington with the girl, who was now in the care of relatives. After obtaining money at Wellington, Porter had taken the car and the three drove to Palmerston North. When they were arrested in Auckland th« y had r money. Burke had previously been convicted of breaking and entering. Porter was a first offender. He was a New Zealander, but had been serving in the Australian Navy. There was a series of charges against both accused in the South. After Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., had imposed sentence on the summary : counts, Porter and Burke were remanded to appear at Christchurch on Thursday on a charge of breaking and entering the shop of Victor Pulley, at Rangiora, on May 13, and committing
