NEW TALKIE HOUSES

AMALGAMATED THEATRES, LTD. Alterations have recently been carried out at the popular suburban theatre, the Regent, Manukau Road, Epsom, which has been acquired by the Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd. This is a modern picture house with seating capacity for close on 1,000 persons. The new owners are installing the latest American talking equipment, and it is expected to reopen the theatre in a few days’ time. Another of the company’s ventures is a new theatre in Whangarei. This is now nearing completion, and will be named the Regent. It is situated in the heart of the residential area, and has a seating capacity for 1,250 people. It is expected to be opened in a month’s time. The governing director of the company, Dr. F. J. Rayner, stated recently that plans were now being drawn for two additional theatres. One would be in an Auckland suburb, and the other in the country. They would both be built dh the most modern lines, and be equipped with the best reproducing plant. As far as the Regent, Epsom, was concerned, he was of opinion that the district was important enough to have its own talking theatre, and he had made contracts for the best talking feature films. These would be shown nightly, with afternoon sessions whenever the occasion warranted.
