STAYED TOO LONG
CHINESE DEPORTED AND FINED ELUDED BONDSMEN Eluding two fellow countrymen who had signed a bond making themselves responsible for him, Fong Sui, a Chinese laundryman, aged 20, ran away to Dunedin on the morning of the day he was supposed to leave the shores of New Zealand. At the Police Court this morning he was fined £25, and a deportation order was made. Fong pleaded guilty to staying in New Zealand longer than the terms of his temporary immigration permit allowed. The Collector of Customs. Mr. T. C. Rowe, said accused had arrived in the country on June 17, 1929. His permit was for six months, but he had obtained an extension on account of sickness. Two local men had signed a deed holding Yhernseives * responsible for him, but, on the morning he was supposed to sail from the country, he had run away and was later arrested while working in a laundry in Dunedin Mr. Goodall, who appeared for the bondsmen, asked that accused be kept in custody until be was deported on the first boat available. As it was, the bondsmen had •to pay the expenses of Fong’s arrest. The man had no money to pay his fine. A deportation order was issued and Fong was fined £25.
