SIX MONTHS’ GAOL
SEVEN FALSE PRETENCE CHARGES GAVE HIMSELF UP “Probation is impossible/’ decided Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, when Walter Joseph Bunting, a land and stock agent, aged 38, appeared for sentence on seven charges of obtaining money and goods by valueless cheques. Bunting was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Bunting, who had given himself up, having successfully avoided the police for some months, explained that he wanted the affair cleared up so he could return to his wife and family in Hamilton. Mr. Smyth asked for probation on accused’s behalf. The magistrate remarked that Bunting had been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for fraudulent dealing with cattle and was released on licence. As soon as the licence expired, he had commenced robbing people by valueless cheques, obtaining more than £4O in one month. Leniency was out of the question.
