ONE BIG UNION
UNEMPLOYED FORM NEW ORGANISATION COMPILATION OF FIGURES A “One Big Union of Unemployed and Casual Workers” has been officially formed, and yesterday rented an office at 28 Swanson Street. The officials are:—Chairman, Mr. W. Murphy; secretary, Mr. J. O’Carroll; executive committee, Messrs. A. Fletcher, assistant-secretary, Geo. Budd, organiser, W. Beehre, W. Ollvis, W. Miller and S. Lewis. Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Stephens will organise the unemployed women.
The constitution provides that the dues shall be 2d a week, and that the union shall organise the unemployed and partially employed workers to obtain work at trade union rates or full maintenance from the Government authorities. None of the funds of the union shall be used for purposes of individual charity. The membership, in two days, has reached 128 and the first step that has been taken is the compiling of a full list of unemployed. The union will also assist in improving conditions of work at relief camps.
