NEW MARTS SCHEME
RETAIL STALLS ON SITE OF PRESENT MARKETS PLAN TO INCREASE REVENUE The conversion of the present fruit and produce markets, Customs Street West, into a retail mart, with attractive stalls, was a scheme placed before the City Council last evening by Mr. C. F. Bennett, who had been asked to report on the present value of part of the property, and the rentals from it. Mr. Bennett said that the locality of the existing markets was probably as good for a market centre as could be found, having regard to land values and access to shipping and railways, but the site was already showing signs of becoming small even for the existing bulk business, while the surrounding road spaces were inadequate, and the surrounding properties were now occupied by established businesses. Mr. Bennett estimated that 10,000 square feet of floor space, let in retail stalls, should return £650 to £7BO a year, which was considerably more than was being received from an equal j area at present. He suggested that, j in any scheme, ample provision should i be made to create an attractive ren- , dezvous for all patrons of the market. I
