ASKS FOR SUBMARINE
WILKINS READY FOR TRIP UNDER SEA TO POLE WILL BORE THROUGH ICE (Received 9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Tuesday. Sir Hubert Wilkins has written requesting the Navy Department to allow him to charter a decommissioned submarine. 0126. for a trip to the Arctic. If the craft is made available it will be rebuilt and equipped with machinery to enable it to bore through ice. The explorer says he will take a balloon for aerial observations, also wireless and television apparatus.
