More Surprise Wins at Hawera

CHOPIN AND LATAKIA SUCCESS OF VALSTREET Special to THE SUN HAWERA, Saturday. The Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting was concluded today in mild, sunny weather. The totalisator handled £18,340, an increase of £172 over the second day last year. For the two days the total was £36.378, an increase of £263. There were a few surprises, both Chopin and Latakia being at good odds. Paiko led to the straight from Go wan Lea, Tentcall, Royal Finance and Patearoa. Patearoa challenged in the straight and Royal Finance made a run on the rails, but Paiko stuck on to win by a head from Patearoa, with Royal Finance a good third and Tentcall fourth. Gueress and Anbridge were left several lengths at the start. With six furlongs to go in the Mana- . wapou Hurdles, Whisogne took charge from Airforce, Roys.l Acre and Gienstar. Royal Acre led across the top and into the straight. Challenged by Glenstar, he stuck on to win by a length. Airforce was four lengths away, third, and Whisogne fourth. Calithe’s rider lost an iron. The Steeplechase After Waitaunaha and Airtight had made a good deal of the running in the Adamson Steeples, the field closed up nearing the straight. Airtight. Aurora Borealis, Democratic and Waitaunaha approached the straight with little separating them. Aurora Borealis finished best to win by two lengths from Diana’s Lad, wuo beat Airtight by six lengths. Waitaunaha was fourth. Maidos and Maunga lost their riders. Te Atiawa and Benzora led to the straight in the Mokoia Handicap from Melissa, Lady Quex and Town Bird. In a fine finish Lady Quex came to the front to win by a length from Hopwood, who beat Melissa by a head. Llanore and To Atiawa were both close up. Blue Paper, a hot favourite, led to the straight, in the Shorts Handicap from Moatoa, Valstreet, Rule Britannia and Patearoa. In Ihe run home Valstreet won by two lengths from Patearoa, with Blue Paper a length and alialf away third and Rule Britannia fourth. Silvermine, a warm favourite, was well beaten in the Davidson Handicap. Just So led to the straight from The Swell, Ruanui, Yoma and Silvermine. In a good finish Chopin won by half a length from The Swell, with Mountain Heath and Just So next, and Silvermine seventh. Borough Hack Latakia, a warm favourite with Gray up on Thursday, was sent out at double-figuro odds for the final event, T. Green being his pilot on this occasion. Goldlike, Merry Melody and Brilliant Light, all winners the first day, were most heavily backed. Latakia surprised by jumping away into the lead and he was never headed. At the turn for home he was two lengths clear of Brfiliant Light. Potoleer, Remora and Werata. Although tiring, Latakia hung on to get a head decision over Werata, who finished strongly, and Joyspear was a length away, just clear ctf Brilliant Light.
