ST. HELIERS BUSES
WATERFRONT TIME-TABLE DIFFICULTIES IN THE WAY As the waterfront road is unlikely to be available for bus traffic for at least six months, the Transport Board decided this morning that there was no need to hurry the St. Heliers bus operators, L. J. Keys, Ltd., for the submission of a tentative time-table. In reply to an earlier request by the board Mr. Keys said that it was extremely difficult to supply a proposed time-table and scale of fares for ihe Remuera route and that via the waterfront road until the completion of the tram extension and the waterfront road, respectively. Some weeks of operation would be required to determine what amount of traffic would be diverted from the Tamaki highway to the waterfront road. Mr. Keys felt that at the outset there would be Insufficient traffic to make the service pay, but that the position would right itself in due course. The deputy-chairman, Mr. G. Baildon, proposed that the question be deferred. Mr. E. H. Potter felt that the question should be considered before the expiration of a month. Mr. Keys should be given adequate time to prepare for the service. Mr. Entrican pointed out that there was no need for haste as far as the waterfront road was concerned, but that the question of a time-table on the Meadowbank Road was urgent in view of the completion of the tram extension which will be open for traffic on June 8. He thought a feeder service might be then considered. “The only effect of the extension will be that Mr. Keys will not be able 10 pick up passengers on the tram route,” remarked the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford. vMr. Entrican: They are being picked up now. I saw two taken on at Market Road last Sunday. Mr. Ford (drily): Yes, they are friends of the driver or the owners. (Laughter.) Mr. Baildon’s motion was agreed to.
