TRAMS TO STATION
QUESTION OF FARES
TWOPENCE IN MEANTIME
The tramline from Queen Street to the new railway station will be one section, and the fare in the meantime twopence. Decisions to this effect were made at this morning’s Transport Board meeting. The manager recommended that the board apply for an authorising Order-in-Council, subject to the board obtaining a grant of the running rights from the Railway Department. “I have an idea that we will have to make the first section from the station to Wellesley Street, not to the post office,” commented the deputychairman, Mr. G. Baildon. Mr. E. J. Phelan: We can reduce but we cannot increase, m.that the position? Tile Manager, Mr. A. E. Ford: That is so. Mr. A. J. Entrican: The fair thing would be Id from Queen Street to the atiun. The question will be subject to revision later. GRAVE DIFFICULTIES The council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce is of opinion that the gravest difficulties are likely t’o be met with in. the handling of traffic between the new railway station and Queen Street, The council asked the board whether the question had been fully considered and if so, what was the outcome of the. deliberations. , The businessmen pointed out that, at peak hours Queen Street was appar ’ ently already bearing all the tram traffic possible. They could: .not see how about 2,000 more passengers between the station and Queen Street could be satisfactorily dealt with, particularly on wet days. The board referred the communication to the board-in-committee, to be reported on in conjunction with the Albert Street tram extension, upon which a report was shortly to be issued by the manager.
