SEASON USHERED IN From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Sunday. The match in which Frankton drew 9-all with Manukau Rovers before a large attendance at Rugby Park yesterday ushered in the local football season. Play remained mostly among the forwards, with occasional flashes of brilliancy. Frankton had the upper hand in the early stages and in the third quarter there was even battling. Manukau held the margin of attack in the last quarter. Simmons opened Frankton’s scoring account with a try following a pickup in the ruck by Griffiths. Everest, failed to convert. Manukau evened when Taylor had the leather from Newton (who manoeuvred the blind side) and went over in the corner. The kick was unsuccessful. Play seesawed for a period until Everest went over the line following a brisk onslaught by the local side. McWilliams failed to convert. Frankton 6, Manukau 3. The home players had crossed again just before half-time, Whatu being the scorer. The kick was disallowed. Fluctuating play in which the forwards boro the brunt of the work characterised the early part of ttm second spell. Brimble scored for Manukau from a free kick in a handy position. The visitors came back to the home 25 and were awarded another penalty which Brimble finalised, making the tallies 9 all. Frankton were obliged to force twice in quick succession when Manukau strove hard to gain supremacy. The match ended with play in midfield, leaving the final scores: Frankton 9 Manukau 9 Mr. A. C. Watkins was the referee. TAURANGA RUGBY From Our Own Correspondent TAURANGA, Today. At a meeting of the Rugby management committee it was decided to put in a challenge in accordance with the rules for the Huruni-Apanui Shield. A letter was received from the Thames Rugby Union asking for the fixing of dates suitable for matches to be played at Tauranga and Thames. The secretary of the Bay of Plenty Union advised that June 14 had been fixed for the match Te Puke v. Tauranga for the Hurunui-Apanui Shield, the match to be played at Tauranga. It was resolved that an endeavour be made to travel to Thames on June 3 with a senior and junior team, also primary and secondary school teams. Matches are to be arranged with the Paeroa Club.
