FARRELL’S SUCCESS

AUCKLAND BEATS SOUTH AT SWIMMING FIRST VARSITY CONTESTS Auckland University College's swimming team won the challenge shield presented by the staff and the professorial board of the college for inter-university swimming when the first tournament of the kind was held at the Tepid Baths last evening. The most impressive performance of the evening was when J. P. Farrell, captain of the University College Swimming Club, and former sprint champion of Auckland, outpaced the representatives of the Southern universities to win the 100 yards men’s championship in the fast time of 59 4-5. Farrell was in excellent form, and he took the 220 yards event —although he is at his best in sprint swimming—in good time. In both events his most difficult opponent was E. Fitch, of Canterbury, whose strokes were nicely timed. Farrell also performed excellently in the dual relay contest, and gave Auckland a valuable margin. Honours in the women’s events were divided between Miss E. Leitz. Auckland, and Miss V. Edser, Otago University. Miss Leitz won the 50 yards championship, but Miss Edser’s more deliberate style of swimming gained her the 100 yards title. PONSONBY ASSISTS Several Auckland University College events, a primary schools’ championship, a secondary schools’ championship, and races in which the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Society assisted the tournament committee. by providing competitors, completed a programme which was well appreciated by a very large attendance. Ponsonby divers, with W. Hassan, H. Neale, and G. Johnson prominent, gave an excellent exhibition. Another important event was the invitation race for women over a distance of 50 yards. Miss Marie Farquhar, of Waitemata Club, and Miss Peggy Robertson, of Parnell, were the principal competitors, and the Auckland champion defeated Miss Robertson narrowly after an exciting struggle. R. Thomas, of Grammar Club, the Auckland intermediate champion, set a fast time in an attempt to break the New Zealand intermediate record, although he failed to improve- on I. W. Cameron’s time. It was an evening of lively enthusiasm, what with partisan shoutings and the concerted efforts of members of the Auckland Hongi Club. The I-lon-gians provided choruses, endless “Akarana” hakes, and even a novelty swimming event in which the liveliest members plunged into the baths, attired in feminine clothes. The results were: UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS 100 YARDS MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP J. P. Farrell (Auckland U.C.) .. .. 1 E. Fitch (Canterbury U.C.) 2 S. Fogg (Otago U.) 3 Time, 59 4-ssec.
