HAWERA TROTS
FINE FINISH IN BIG HANDICAP ENAWAH GETS THE STAKE Special to THE SUX HAWERA, Monday. The Ilawera Trotting Club's Easter carnival concluded today in unpleasant weather, but this did not. deter enthusiasts rolling up in large numbers. Despite heavy rain overnight the trick was in good order. The racing was full of many thrilling finishes being witnessed. There was a decrease on the machine for the meeting, the figures being: 1929, £38,764, against £36,253 for this fixture. The Waimate Plains Handicap was a great race, Ena wall winning ' from Logan’s Pride (who was boxed in at the turn). A. McMillan stole a march on the rails and the mare hung on to beat Logan’s Pride, who finished strongly on the outer by a bare length. King, driver of Royal Silk, who ran third, was cautioned after the race for negligent driving during the middle stages of the race. Trial Handicap Capillano was a warm favourite for the Trial Handicap, and patiently driven by Gerrard the filly came at the right end to win easily. Hemlock Tlero, Bingen Crest and Drift Wave was the leading trio at the stands, followed by Myrtle Dillon, Cogent and Teri Kingi. There was no change along the back, but crossing the top Matchmaker made a run into second berth, with the favourite following handy. Matchmaker displaced Hemlock Hero at the home turn, where Capillano moved up and in the run home the Hastings filly won comfortably from Rita Thorpe, who finished well in second place. Elawah, badly placed early, was a good third, then came Matchmaker. Oliver Thorpe. Hemlock Hero and Teri Kingi. Oh awe Trot Laurier began like a train in the Ohawe Trot and was in front after two furlongs had been covered from Bessie Bingen and Caballero. With six furlongs traversed Bessie Bingen reduced the gap to the leader, with Caba.lletro heading the rest several lengths back. Bessie Bingen was on terms with Laurier at the home turn, but Green’s old trotter hung on to beat Bessie Bingen by half a length. Rangitero finished faist into third place, followed closely by Caballero (who broke in the straight), Kelson Parrish and .Toy Ride. The winner paid $ double-figure dividend. Kapuni Handicap Gamness won the day for Lee Nelson in his desperate finish with Brent Zolock in the Kapuni Handicap. Prince Pedro was the early leader from Lee Nelson, Bren Zolock, Bonniewah and Rangihau. Along the back Brent Zolock attempted to take the lead off the four-year-old, but the youngster went with him, the pair leaving the field. Together they turned for home and in a ding-dong finish W. Head scored by a hetd over Brent Zolock. Two lengths back came Warrenore, followed by Zealous, Gumdigger and Rangihau. The Big Handicap The Waimate Plains Handicap provided a great thrill for backers, with the three best backed candidates filling the places, Enawah, third choice, wining from the Cup winner, Logan’s Pride, with the favourite, Royal Silk, third. El Direct went to the front from the rise of the barrier, followed by Tumatakuru, Hostess and Gang Awa. El Direct was making the pace at the half-mile (1.10) and had the advantage at the mile (2.21), where he was closely attended by Tumatakuru, Gang Awa, Hostess. Enawah, Royal Silk and Logan’s Pride in bunched formation. At the 12-furlong disc El Direct was still the leader (3.30), but Gang Awa headed him at the turn, with Enawah. Warplane and Logan’s Pride all handy. Once in line for home Enawah hit the front, while Warplane and Logan’s Pride made a dash. Warplane was done at the half-distance, where Royal Silk showed up. Logan’s Pride made a great effort, but failed by a length to catch Enawah. Royal Silk was two lengths back, third, with Warplane fourth. Then oame Gang Awa, All Red, Tumatakuru and Hostess. Patea Handicap The Patea Handicap provided a real thrilling finish, six horses flashing past the post almost in line. Queen Elizabeth was a warm fancy, but was beaten into third place. Halmore went for the doctor in the early stages to lead past the stand from High Sea, Native Hero and the favourite. Along the back Halmore was still well clear of his pursuers, but the field closed up approaching the straight, where the order round the bend was Halmore, Native Piero. Queen Elizabeth, Tumatakuru and High Sea. In a desperate finish High Sea, on the outer, got up to win by a narrow margin from Tumatakuru (who got stopped at the distance), with Queen Elizabeth a head back, third, with Halmore, Cornelian (who lost ground at the start) and Native Hero all in line. Opunake Trot Olive Nelson was a hot pot for the Opunake Trot and the Coast mare strolled home at the finish. Olive Nelson went to the lead at the mile and she turned for home wel clear of Bright Light and Miss Leda (who broke up), and sailing along steadily she won by two lengths from Bright Light, who was the same distance ahead of Miss Leda. Speculator, Paradigm and Anseline were next to arrive. Stewards' Handicap Ngahuia was elected a good favour- ! ite for the Stewards’ Handicap, and I well driven by J. Gerrard he won nicely ! at the finish. When the straight was I reached Wild Voyage was showing the j way to Nathaniel, Trustworthy, Richore, Brook Pointer and Ngahuia. Once in line for the judge the favourite came with a great rattle to get the verdict over Wild Voyage by half a \ length, with Richore a neck away | third, followed by Trustworthy, Nath- | aniel and Cora Tacks. The Final Harold Logan was a big fancy in the final event, but refused to go away, making his backers pretty glum. Once on going he paced in great stj’le to finally win by three lengths. The favourite put in a great run across the top to lead round the turn from Brent Zolock, Gold Treasure, St. George and Richmond Lass. and then he came away in the final stretch to win easily from Brent Zolock, with Gold Treasure third, heading St. George, Kevinbrae, and Great Author.
