“SHOOTING” ELEPHANTS
PRINCE GETS CLOSE-UPS OF JUNGLE BEASTS WELCOME AT KHARTOUM LONDON, Tuesday. A message from Khartoum, Eastern Sudan, says the Prince of Wales, who is there at present, received 30 native leaders at the historic palace. , The natives were gorgeously robed in purple and wore jewelled swords. They included Sir Abdel Rahman el Mahdi, eldest living son of the Dervish leader who speared General Gordon to death on the steps of the palace when it was captured after the desperate siege of 1885, two days before the relief force was sighted. Also present was Sir Sryed Ali, who claims to have descended from the Prophet Mahomet. The Prince and his equerries on their hunting trip have taken 7,000 feet of cinema film. Their pictures include one showing 300 elephants crossing a river. Two of the animals were in difficulties and the others went fo their assistance. His Royal Highness got within 40 yards of the elephants and secured some wonderful photographs.
