TOO SLOW YET
KAYE DON GIVES UP AT 182.7 M.P.H. CLOUDY SCREEN—BAD BEACH Received 9.45 a.m. United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright DAYTONA BEACH, Thurs. Kaye Don drove his great car, the Silver Bullet, over the course for the sixth time, but, principally due to the condition of the beach, was unable to do better than 182.741 miles an hour. At the end of four trips over the nine-mile course, he gave up for the day. He lays the blame on the imperfect course and the fact that the windshield was clouded severely, especially while he was running south. With the windshield clouded, Don stated he could easily understand how Lockhart ran the car into the ocean there a year ago. Since Don last ran, a fire destroyed iwo-thirds of the wooden stand, and as a result only a few persons watched the runs today. He first came to the beach today cl riving a stock model roadster to feel out the course, but he got no farther than the kilometer mark when he was forced to stop with a burned-out bearing. In the first run south the racer tossed off a protective disc from one wheel, but the loss was neither serious nor dangerous. National Guardsmen were unable to find the lost disc. Although once he had trouble briefly by back-firing, experts are encouraged by the car’s performance. The car since readjustments were made has gained in acceleration. The super-cliargers for the first time emitted a piercing whine, indicating that their speed has increased, and that the pressure is greater, an achievement for which Don has been striving.
It is expected Don will have little further carburettor difficulty.
