HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE The Department of Agriculture has received the ** following cablegram, dated April 5, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London: Tallow.—The market is quiet, with a poor demand at auction, and prices are slightly easier. A total of 706 packages were offered and 133 sold. Present quotations for spot are; Mutton: Fine, 38s a cwt; fair to good, 35s to 36s 6d; dark to dull, 32s 6d to 335. Beef: Sweet and or mixed, 36s Gd to 425; fair to good, 34s to 365; dark to dull, 32s to 335. Mixed: Fair to good, 33s- 6d to 35s 6d; dark to dull, 32s to 335; gut, etc., 29s to 32s Gd. Hemp.—Manila: Market firmer, with better demand. “J” grade April-June shipment sold up to £3O 10s. Closing quieter under freer offerings. MarchMay shipment sold at £3O. April - June shipment, same value. Sisal: Market quiet, except for small demand for urgent requirements. Values unchanged. New Zealand: Market dull and little interest shown. No first-hand business reported, apart from small lots. Fair grade afloat is at last values.
Fruit. —Cox’s Orange apples by the Rangitane in excellent condition. Opening prices for extra fancy grade were 24s to 27s a case. Other varieties not quoted yet. The prices for the Tainui’s shipment, final sales, were: Graven- , stein, 9s to 10s; Worcester Pearmain, 10s to 12s. Oats. —Market firmer for imported oats, with better consuming demand. German sellers are more reserved. March shipment, high qualities, sold at 16s 3d, and Plate April shipment sold at 13s 3d. June shipment was offered at 13s 7Zd. English supplies not so heavy. Good white feed is offered at 17s 6d to 18s, and choice seed at 23s to 245, nominal value.. New Zealand “A” grade Gartons, April shipment, quoted at 22s 6d. Peas.—Maple: Spot market quiet and steady. “A” grade Tasmanian, April shipment, sold at 58s. New Zealand: New crop No. 1 offered at 545. Buyers’ ideas are about 50s. A small parcel of old crop afloat sold at 51s. Not much interest showing. English: In good supply and demand is chiefly for fine seed, which sold up to 47s 6d. Best feed is offered at 42s Gd. Blues: Market dull but steady Lor Japanese. March-April shipment sold up to £l3 15s. No demand for colonial varieties. Nominal value New Zealand blues is £l2 to £l3, ex store. Beans. —Market quiet, but steady. English winter quoted at 38s to 395. Small round spring, 41s. Cocksfoot. —Demand disappointing and prices have declined. Present values are S7s, c.i.f.
