“GOOD CLEAN FIGHTER"
TRIBUTES TO INSPECTOR McCarthy HIGH TRIBUTES PAID “I have known Mr. McCarthy since he was a constable and I was a small boy," said Mr. Allan Moody when Bar and Bench paid a tribute to Inspector McCarthy at the Police Court this morning. “He is a good fighter and a clean fighter." It was the inspector’s last Appearance in the Auckland Police Court before leaving to take up his new position in Invercargill. Tributes were paid by the Bench, the Bar and the Press. "This is the last occasion on which Inspector McCarthy will be appearing in this court, and I think I represent all my brethren of the law and all those who have been associated with him both in and outside- of the court, when I say that it is with the-utmost regret that we part from him,’’ Mr. Singer declared. “We congratulate him on his promotion, and I can pay him the tribute of saying that he is a most capable officer and a courteous gentleman." Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., assured the inspector that the remarks made by Mr. Singer, Mr. Moody, and the Press representative were not a matter of form. They were true and earnest. “I have been 12 or 13 years in this court, * Mr. Hunt said. “Never has the position you oepupy been held by a better man. Men who have occupied that seat have risen to the highest positions in the Polide Force, and not one of them has done his work better than you. In fact in one way you have been better than they have. You have never been inclined to say ‘We can leave it to the magistrate.’ When a case has not merited a prosecution, you have been strong enough to turn it down. It is my hope that further promotion will take you to. a more important centre than Invercargill." Inspector McCarthy thanked the magistrate and the legal profession for the assistance they had given him. lie had never had occasion to complain of any member of the bar. “If I nave earned my meed of praise it is through the help given me by your Worship and the gentlemen of the bar,” the i inspector added.
