DETECTIVE’S TRANSFER

CRITICISM ON WATERFRONT MR. McHUGH SHIFTED The transfer of Detective-Sergeant McHugh from the‘Queen’s Wharf station to the Central Police Station is not welcomed in shipping circles. Captain R. S. Lewis, marine superintendent of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, maintains that if the trails- ! fer means that the wharves are to be ■ left without a detective, the shipping „ firms will be made liable to more pilI lage losses, and the general public , will not be so well protected from ! overseas criminals. . i It would be eminently unsuitable if j a detective who had little knowledge ; of the waterfront had to be sent down j in an emergency, when Detective Mc- : Hugh knew the waterfront so well and | knew all the cargo thieves, suspects ! and receivers in the City. I Inspector Hollis, when questioned | said the change was connected with ■ j the reorganisation of the detective ] forces by the appointment of a subinspector in control of detectives, and he would prefer to say nothing until the new sub-inspeetora arrived. In any case, should trouble arise on the wharves, Detective-Sergeant McHugh could be sent there if necessary in the future. On the waterfront at present there were 12 uniformed con-, stables and one sergeant.
