SHOWER OF BRICKBATS
POLICEMAN KILLED IN CALCUTTA RIOTS CARTERS BLOCK ROADWAY Reed. 9.5 a.m. DELHI, Tuesday. Two sharp riots occurred at Calcutta when carters, bitterly resenting the recent legislation reducing carryable loads on bullock and buffalo carts, unhooked the carts, blocked the roads and tram lines in the busiest part of the city, and received the police with showers of brickbats. The mob was getting out of hand when the police fired. Two hours later a more serious riot occurred. The total casualties known are five killed and 60 injured, including a number of police. In fact, the commissioner estimates that every second policeman was hurt.
