BRIDES TWO DAYS OLD
INDIAN MEN MARRY INFANTS TO ESCAPE NEW ACT Reed. 10.40 a.m. DELHI, Thursday. Hundreds of thousands of boys and girls, mostly of the Hindu caste, many of them still l in the cradle, are being married throughout India in the la_t few days, in order to evade the provisions of the Indian Ch'ld Marriage Act, which comes into operation on Tuesday next. The Act raises the marriage age to 14 years and the age of consent to 16 years. Most of the brides and bridegrooms are between nine and 12 years, but instances have been reported from the Bombay district where girls a few days old have been marr.ed, in some cases, to men 20 years their seniors.
