FACTORY ALIGHT AGAIN

DESTRUCTION COMPLETED THiS MORNING FUMES ENDANGER FIREMEN A second outbreak of fire early this morning completed the destruction of the two-storey factory building at the corner of Flower and Nikau Streets. Eden Terrace, which was damaged by an outbreak on Wednesday morning last. The building is now a total loss and all the contents were destroyed, with the exception of a little machinery in the basement, which was damaged by water. Firemen of the City Brigade, which extinguished the flames, had a fortunate escape from asphyxiation. On the upper floor of the building, occupied by the Atlas Furnishing Company, was a fuming cabinet for treating oak. This contained a number of jars of ammonia and other chemicals. These had been broken by the heat during the earlier fire, but t.hr cabinet, being airtight, had not allowed the escape of any fumes, which were similar to those used during wartime. The setting loose of those fumes without causing damage was giving the furnishing company considerable anxiety. The cabinet was destroyed during this morning’s, outbreak, fortunately without danger to anyone. This morning’s fire burned much more fiercely than that of Wednesday, windows of houses across the road being broken and two large mirrors cracked by the heat. Machine accessories to a value of about £159 which had since been storfod in the building ware destroyed. A light motor-truck, partly repaired since the former outbreak, was again burned, fortunately without igniting several gallons of benzine in the tank. The ground floor, occupied by Mr. H. Stevenson, builder, also suffered considerably. SAWMILL GUTTED FIRE AT ONEHUNGA LOSS TO PARKER, LAMB AND CO. At 4 o’clock this morning a lire swept through the upper portion of a large sawmill owned by Parker. Lamb apd Company, in Prince's Street, Onehunga, The Ofaehunga Firs Brigade, after a strenuous fight, succeeded in saving the lower* part of the building, but the upper portion was completely gutted. A quantity of timber in the upper storey was destroyed, and considerable damage was done by water to the ground floor. The alarm was given by a passing milkman, and when the fire brigade arrived on the scene the buildings were enveloped in flames. Fortunately tlfiere was a good pressure of water, and the firemen soon had the flames under control. It Is thought that the outbreak started in a. sawdust container near the bodler.
