INTERESTING ADDRESS MISS AMY HANSARD TALKS TO PENWOMEN At the Penwomen's Club Rooms on Tuesday evening, Aliss Amy Hansard gave an interesting address based upon the importance of good technique, artistic phrasing, keen sense of rhythm and clearness of diction. Clever illustrations emphasised the necessity of careful attention to these points. The lecturer next spoke on the importance of imagination and individuality in attaining real artistic interpretation. To draw comparison on this point gramophone records of “The Erl King” were given. The point that the singer must interpret by means of facial expression as well as by the voice was clearly defined in a few pithy remarks, and the lecturer pointed out that a singer likes to be looked at by the audience, bowed heads giving the performer an idea that they are bored or indifferent. At the conclusion of her address Aliss Hansard sang delightfully the following songs, “Lament of Iris,” “Songs of the Hebrides,” and “A Garden Is a Lonesome Thing.” Aliss Renee Satchwell acted as accompanist.
