FAIR AT NORTHCOTE

The Northeote Primary School Committee in conjunction with the Women's Progressive League was responsible for a most successful Paddy’s Alarket held in the spacious grounds of the junior high school on Saturday. There was a large attendance, and the proceeds obtained are to bo devoted to the paying of Northcote’s share of the dental clinic now being erected at Birkenhead, and also for the provision of a Sunshine League Air. J. P. MePliail, Mayor of Birkenhead, and chairman of the Junior High School Committee, in his address, said that in the last 12 months the sum of £4OO had been spent in improving the school grounds. Two asphalt tennis courts, basketball, cricket and football grounds had been provided, tho committee being of the opinion that the physical development of the scholar was a great adjunct to his educational attainment. Other speakers were Mrs. N. E. Ferner. member of the Education Board and president of the Community Sunshine Association; Air. R. G. W. Alason. M.P, for Auckland Suburbs; and Air. H. Harding, of the Primary Schools Committee. Air. Alex. Harris, AI.P. for Waitemata, officially opened the fair. The Birkenhead Alunieipal Band, under tlie baton of Lieutenant J. T. Leighton, was present, and gave a selection of first-class music. Sideshows were numerous, while prizes for best decorated prams and trollies, and a baby competition, attracted mans’ entries. The following ladies were in charge of the stalls: —Jumble stall, Mrs. D. P. O’Leary, Aliss L. Couldrey; cake stall, Alesdames F. Swinbank, J. A. Robertson and J. Fawcett; ice cream and summer drinks, Air. W. G. and Aliss Whitcombe; produce. Airs. J. W. AleLaughlin, Mrs. T. C. Allely and Aliss R. Neville;, afternoon tea, Aliss Phyllis Johnston, Airs. J. W. Bethwaite, Aliss E. Alackay, Miss E. AI. Shutes and Airs. H. Harding. # The joint secretaries were Airs. A. Taylor and Air. ,l. W. 'NbvilF.
