SHAMROCK FIVE
TRIALS IN THE SOLENT Shamrock V., Sir Thomas Lipton’s new America Cup challenger, is to sail in the Solent against some of the best-known racing yachts shortly after her completion. Her launch will take place in March next. A month will then be occupied in fitting her out, and by May she will be ready for sailing. A series of special races in which Shamrock V. will meet other craft for trying-out purposes has been arranged. They are to be held in the Solent between May 8 and June 9. The Royal Yacht Squadron, the Royal London Y.C., the Royal Thames Y.C., the Royal Victoria Y.< ’., and the Royal Southern Y.C. are all participating in organising these preliminary tests. The fact that so many of the principal yacht clubs have joined in promoting these contests shows the tremendous interest which Shamrock V. has aroused in yachting circles. After competing in various British regattas, including the Clyde Fortnight, Shamrock V. will leave for America about July 8. Good progress is being made in her construction. Her keel and steel frame are in position, the deck beams are being built into her, and »lie is nearly ready for the planking of her hull. A striking feature of the yacht will be her 150 ft mast. This will be hollow, and a special building has to be erected in which to fit the sections of the mast together. Shamrock V. will be equipped with three boats—namely, a launch for Sir Thomas Lipton’s use’ a lifeboat for the crew, and a dinghy.
