GAOL AND PROBATION
THIEVES WHO WERE IN A HURRY TOOK PETROL AND TYRES Two travelling showmen who had stolen tyres and petrol for their motortruck so thav they could hurry to Te Kuiti where the Agricultural and Pastoral Show was being held, appeared at the Police Court this morning before Mr. W. R. McKean. S.M., for sentence. Alder Francis Walding, a labourer, aged 24, was admitted to probation for three years and ordered to make restitution of £5. Frederick George Lester was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment on one charge and admitted to three years’ probation on the second charge. He was ordered to make restitution of £1 10-s. Mr. Jacob appeared for Walding and Mr. Smyth for Lester.
Passing sentence, the magistrate remarked that "Walding, who had been on probation before, had behaved satisfactorily under supervision. Lester had, already Served terms of imprisonment and could not be dealt with in the same way. ~“I had though of sending both accused to gaol for a fairly lengthy term,” added Mr. McKean.
