AMERICA MAY CLAIM BYRD’S NEW DISCOVERIES BRITAIN’S RIGHTS INVOLVED WASHINGTON, Friday. The Acting-Secretary of State, Mr. Cotton, today expressed the view that the intention of Rear-Admiral Byrd not to claim the Antarctic lands he has discovered was not to be considered binding upon the American Government. A mesage from New York says the Washington correspondent of the New York “Times” says: It is believed that Britain has the best-established claim to the Falkland Islands dependencies. There have been suggestions that by giving Britain sovereignty ovei the territory adjacent to Australia it might be possible to exchange the American and British claims to Wilkes Land and the Falkland Islands areas.
