FRUIT MARKETING

IMPROVING CONDITIONS FOR RETAILERS STANDARDISATION URGED Proposals for improving the marketing of fruit were discussed in Wellington when the New Zealand fruit letailers met at a conference, the main purpose of which was to prepare the retailers’ case in anticipation of the Government investigation of grading, packing and general marketing methods of fruit and vegetables. t Auckland was represented Mr. W. G. Shearer, the president, and Mr. H. G. Stacey, the secretary of the Auckland Retail Fruiterers’ Association. The conference chairman was Mr. J. W. Ranson, of Wellington. One resolution asked the Government to regulate exports so as to ensure that sufficient fruit of all grades is retained in the country for local consumption. Another asked that all classes of fruit sold locally shall be equal in quality to that which is exported and that all fruit, produce and vegetables shall be graded and standardised. It was decided to call the attention ot the Government to the unsuitability of the existing shipping arrangements for the importation of Cook Island oranges. The Government will also be asked to pay special attention to the high prices charged for bananas. As a result of the conference, a New Zealand Retail Fruiterers’ Federation was formed with two representatives from each centre constituting an executive committee. The following were appointed pro tem:—Mr. J. W. Ranson and T. A. Osborne, Wellington; Mr. E. E. Eldridge and Mr. B. A. tV. Thompson. Canterbury; and Air W G. Shearer and Air. C. Ah Chee. Auckland. Mr. Shearer was elected first president, Mr. Eldridge vice-president, and Air. Staley, honorary secretarv' The registered office will be in Auckland.
