DAZZLING HEADLIGHTS

N.Z. ENGINEER'S INVENTION I SOLVES PROBLEM | ■ ALL GLARE REMOVED Dazzling headlighhts which are dan- j gerous and mar the pleasure of night- : driving form a problem which appears ! will be solved by a comibnation of a special new headlamp and a transparent viewing screen set nt front of the driver. The invention iyA tnat of Mr. H. F. Taylor, a Batchelor of Engineering. who has devoted considerable time to the study of the dazzle problem. Even with the present dazzling headlights, night travelling is held to have more pleasure for the motorist than travel during the day and it is evident that the combination referred to wlil reduce the danger element to a minimum and add still more pleasure and comfort to night driving. Not only is a flood of vivid light projected for a considerable distance along the road, but all glare is removed from oncoming lights by a simple glance through the view screen. Thus a driver of a car fitted with the new iuv-iiLion can see any object on the road beside an approaching car, with no dazzle from the opposing lights, however severe they may be. This is achieved by a simple adaptation of a well-known principle in optics, without dimming or deflecting the headlights in any way. Last evening a private demonstration was given in Auckland, when the invention worked most successfully and certainly convinced all of those present of its importance to night-driving. Provisional patent rights have been secured and it is the intention of Messrs. Taylor and C. F. Gardener to proceed to England shortly for the purpose of securing world-wide patents. As the device is most effective, simple and cheap, it is possible that in the future the Government will order its compulsory attachment to all cars as it would indeed lessen the number of night-driving accidents.
