ARRESTED FOR SEDITION
INDIAN POLICE CLASH WITH STUDENTS PARTY LEADER’S SPEECH United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 9.45'a.m. DELHI, Thurs. J. M. Sen Gupta, Mayor of Calcutta, and leader of the Congress Party in Bengal, was arrested on a warrant isued by the district magistrate at Rangoon on a charge of sedition. This is the sequel of a speech made at Rangoon recently. He will be removed to Rangoon tomorrow. Gandhi travelled only six miles yesterday. On reaching the village of Asli he addresesd a large meeting. He rebuked the villagers for buying foreign clothing. He resumed his march this morning. Ugly clashes betwen students, incited by agitators, and the police, occurred at Calcutta, and Bombay. A student was arrested at Bombay for disorderly behaviour. His comrades attacked the police escort, and in the ensuing affray several students were injured, and had to be sent to hospital. ROWDY STUDENTS Earlier in the day some students gathered outside the corporation buildings and jeered at and attempted to tear down the Union Jacks, which formed part of the decorations for a dinner to be given by the corporation's president to the Governor, Major-General Sir Frederick Sykes, this evening. The Nationalist members of the corporation are boycotting the. dinner. In Calcutta the students left the schools and demonstrated. Later they besieged the tram depots, and were dispersed by the police. Nationalist demonstrations were held in several centres, and resolutions were passed, pledging support for Gandhi.
