STEAMER COMORIN AFIRE
PASSENGERS- SAFE, BUT CARGO DAMAGED MISHAP AT COLOMBO Reed. 9.45 a.m. COLOMBO, Thurs. There was no panic when a fire broke out on the P. and O. liner Comorin, 15,132 tons, which arrived at Colombo from Australia, in the harbour, at midnight. All the passengers were ashore, and the crew safe. The fire is believed to have been due to spontaneous combustion. Much of the cargo has already been damaged, and a hold has been flooded. The cargo off wool fibre, copra, and frozen meat in No. 2 and No. 3 holds was destroyed. , The watertight, doors were locked to prevent the fire spreading. This is so far successful, but the fire in the holds is still raging. Tugs are standing by pumping water into the fore part of the ship. Considerable damage is done to the first class dining saloon, which is immediately above No. 3 hold. The Australian mails are not transhipped. The Comorin will not leave until Saturday. The passengers will not be transhipped, but will leave on the Comorin. This morning the vessel had a list to port. It Is now 30 degrees to starboard.
