THREATS TO CHINESE

“THROWING HIS WEIGHT ABOUT” OLD OFFENDER FINED £1 “He was throwing his weight about; going into Chinese shops and threatening to smash everything,” explained Sub-Inspector McCarthy when Leslie Clifton Arthur Payne was charged at the Police Court this morning with being disorderly while drunk. Payne, a labourer, aged 28, pleaded guilty to the offence, which was committed in Ponsonby Road yesterday. ‘‘He has a long list, but he hasn’t been here since April, 1928,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.

The Sub-Inspector: There is a good reason. He has been up at Mount Eden.

“I didn’t notice that,” remarked the magistrate, imposing a fine of £l, in default three days’ imprisonment.
