NGARUAWAHIA REGATTA

INTERESTING EVENT The annual Ngaruawahia regatta, one of the most unique and interesting events in New Zealand, is to be held on Saturday next. Particular interest centres in the Maori aquatic events, which include races for war canoes, manned by large crews of husky and athletic Maori men, canoe hurdle races for both Maori men and girls. Maori girls’ canoe races, and other novelty canoe events. Poi dances and hakas conducted by large and well-drilled bands of Maoris in the full splendour of their native costumes are other features of outstanding interest. The rowing events attract entries from the leading rowing clubs throughout the province and exceptionally keen competition is anticipated this year. Last year a record crowd lined the banks of the beautiful Waikato at Ngaruawahia, and it is the opinion of regular visitors that the regatta gets better each year. The side-shows, which are alwavs a big attraction, promise to be brighter than ever. Luncheon booths will be open continuously, and hot water will be obtainable.
