LATE VISCOUNT GLADSTONE CAREER IN POLITICS Reed. 1.5 p.m. LONDON, Thursday. Tlie death has occurred of Viscount Gladstone, the youngest son of the late Mr. W. B. Gladstone, aged 76. The Rt. Hon. Herbert John Gladstone. created first Viscount Gladstone in 1910, was b;rn at the famous residence, No. 12 Downing Street, on January 7, 1854. He was educated at Eton and Oxford and contested the Middlesex County seat in 1880. From 1880 to 1881 he acted as private secretary to his father and from then until 1885 he was a Lord of the Treasury. After holding a number of departmental secretaryships he became Chief Whip to the Liberal Party in 1899, a position ho occupied until 1906. From 1905 until 1910 he was Secretary of State l'®r Home Affairs and he was appointed as Governor-General and High Commissioner in South Africa from. 1910 until 1914. He leaves no heir.
