SUGAR SUPPLIES
SHORTAGE BEING OVERTAKEN The sugar shortage which has been apparent in Auckland is now being overtaken. This statement was made by Mr. G. N. Worledge, manager of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Limited, Auckland, in reply to an ino.uiry today. The council of the Auckland Provincial Fruitgrowers’ Association had pointed out that the exceptionally heavy fruit crop this year had made heavy demands on supplies and asked that production of refined sugar be facilitated. That was a week aero. The company readily acceded and the run on supplies 10 days ago will be overtaken within three or four days.
“There is nothing whatever to be alarmed about,” remarked the manager. “We have large quantities of unrefined sugar on hand and it is being refined in increasing supplies.” Mr. \\orledge said the shortage was caused in the first instance by householders buying up really mere than they immediately required so that others had to go without. In view of the very heavy fruit crop which incidentally had come later this season, everyone was making larger stores of jam.
