FEWER APPRENTICES

ENGINEERS’ REQUEST A reduction in the ratio of apprentices in the engineering trade from two to one journeyman to one apprentice to two journeymen was sought by the Auckland Engineers’ Union in the Arbitration Court. Mr. R. F. Barter, supported the application on behalf of the union. He stated that the ratio now sought, was in operation ten years ago, but the employers had secured the- increase in the number of apprentices, but conditions had now changed, and many journeymen were unable to secure work.

Opposing the application, Mr. W. E. Anderson, assistant secretary of the Auckland Employers’ Federation, contended that retention of the present ratio of apprentices was essential, this proportion being in operation in Otago, Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland. Decision was reserved.
