THEATRE GUTTED
FIRE AT NEW PLYMOUTH LESSEES’ HEAVY LOSS From Our Own Correspondent NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. Fire gutted the Empire Theatre in Devon Street late on Saturday evening. The damage is estimated at £2,000, the stage, curtains and seats having been destroyed and nothing left standing except the concrete shell o£ the building. When the alarm was given the flames had spread widely through the theatre, and the brigade had a difficult and dangerous task before it. When water was played on the ceiling the metal sheets of the roof, made red-hot by the fire, crashed to the ground. Smoke poured out from every opening, and only the concrete walls prevented the neighbouring building from catching. The building was owned by the estate of the late Mr. James Bellringer, and was leased by Taranaki Amusements. Limited, whose property was badly damaged. The lessees’ total Insurance was only £950, while the building was covered for £1,200.
