One-Dividend Fields Meet at Dargaville
BRAMPTON HOME TWICE CUP TO KING WILLONYX Special to THE SUH DARGAVILLE, Sunday. The annual race meeting of the Dargaville Racing Club was opened at Dargaville on Saturday in beautiful weather and in the presence of a large crowd. The course was a bit soft after steady overnight rain. Five out of the eight races were contested by one-dividend fields, and this made itself felt in the totalisator investments, which amounted to £8,076 against £8,399 10s when the lazt meeting was held at Dargaville two years ago. Last season’s meeting was held at Avondale. Despite the small fields the racing was of the best, a number of tight finishes being witnessed, particularly in the Avoca Handicap. The Dargaville Cun saw King Willonyx register a lashing performance. He was well out from the rails for the greater part of the journey, but nevertheless he had the race won a furlong and a-half from home. The winners of the two sprints were Owairaka and Tanagra respectively. Brampton scored a double, and in his second venture he fell just before reaching the post, but the impetus carried him past. The meeting was excellently managed. There was little to cavil at in this respect. A feature of the day’s racing was .the starting of Mr. PI. (Major) Shaw, whose work at the barrier was attended with extraordinary success. His dispatches were 100 per cent, perfect, and the best seen on any racecourse for a long time. It was a triumphal debut for Mr. Shaw. Maiden Handicap Neil (£237) was a short-priced favourite for the Maiden Handicap, and lie won well. Royal Day (£111) was only fourth favourite. Lady Lu was badly left and Lord Hopetown tailed off very early, so that it was really only a four-horse race. Bonnie Day. Neil and Snowplane racing abreast right to the home turn. Snowplane was forced. to cover considerable ground while Royal Day was just behind the leading trio. Bonnie Day was the first to weaken and Neil forged to the front to win by a good half-length. Royal Day was a head in front of Snowplane and Bonnie Day was two lengths back, with the other pair down jhe course. They were far from being a good lot and Neil had little difficulty in winning. Snowplane was a bit unlucky. Toka Toka Handicap Only five* came out for the Toka Toka Handicap, Owairaka, £322, Ned Kelly, £252,, and Valquette, £234, dominating the betting. Royal ’Lover, Valquette,- Owairaka, Ned Kelly and Orchus was the order out of the tapes, and so they raced right to the home turn. Valquette was in front at the distance, but Owairaka soon gathered her in and won by a length. Ned Kelly was a length and a-half away third and Royal Lover and Orchus followed. Kaihu Hack High-weight Only three contested the IlighWeight and Brampton was backed like a Gloaming early but he won up at a great price. Fiery Lad and Bizarro made all the running, but they took 56 seconds for the first half-mile. Brampton caught the leaders at the bottom of the straight, and finally won hardheld by a neck from Fiery Lad, with Bizarro lengths away. Settlers’ Handicap The race for the local horses, the Settlers’ Handicap, attracted nine runners, Furore, £297, being a fairpriced favourite, with Lightwood, £202, next and Fiery Lad, £ll7, who had contested the preceding race, at a fair price. Mineral, Illingar, Furore, Fiery Lad, Waning Light, Lightwood and Turn was the order out from a splendid start, but at the half-mile Furore was in front from Mineral and this pair turned for home ahead of Fiery Lad. Illingar, Lightwood and Turn. Over the last bit Fiery Lad challenged Furore, but th’e favourite hung on just long enough to get the decision by a head. Turn was a length back third and next over the line were Illingar, Lightwood, Mineral and Waning Light. Dargaville Cup
The defection of Glenstar (who was not suited to the soft track) and Bizarro left but five runners in the Dargaville Cup. There was a good totalisa.tor pool, Nassock, £395, being favourite, with Glena Bay, £334. next choice, the winner, King Willonyx, £250, being at fine odds. Golden Wedding tried to win all the way. Passing the post the first time, she was three lengths ahead of Respirator, with Nassock, King Willonyx and Glena Bay following in that order. Along the back Golden Wedding was four lengths ahead of Respirator and King Willonyx, but approaching the straight she weakened, being just iri front of King Willonyx, Nassock, Glena Bay and Respirator. At the distance King Willonyx was in charge and he came on to win easily by three lengths, from Glena Bay, who was two lengths ahead of Respirator. Right up fourth was Nassock. Avoca Handicap
Partial Eclipse, £399, was a solid favourite in the second sprint, the Avoca Handicap, while there was fair support forthcoming for Archeen, £253, and Tanagra, £2OO. Archeen was badly left and Tanagra dwelt on the mark. Ned Kelly, Macroom, Valquette, Gay Cockade and Partial Eclipse being the order out of the barrier. At the half-mile, Ned Kelly, Valquette and Carl Idem were racing in a line ahead of Gay Cockade, Macroom, Partial Eclipse and Tanagra. Macroom led into the straight from Carl Idem, Ned Kelly and Partial Eclipse. A hundred yards from the post seven of the runners were in line and in a thrilling finish, Tanagra beat Archeen by a head, with Partial Eclipse a neck away. Gay Cockade, Carl Idem, Valquette and Macroom were right up in line. Awakirio Handicap
Brampton’s 71b. penalty was reduced by 31b. when apprentice Parsons claimed the allowance, and he was at exactly the same price when he eventually won the Awakino Hack Handicap as in the High-weight earlier in the day. He carried £42S in a fivehorse field, nearest to him in the market being Exalted £196. The favourite was well back early, being eight lengths behind the leader at the half-mile, the order being Orchus, Bonny Day, Exalted and Turn. At tho turn home Orchus and Exalted were just in front of Brampton, but the latter soon put in his claim and was going away, being two lengths clear when he fell right on the post
Turn was second, half a length in front of Orchus, and Exalted and Bonny Day were at intervals. Hobson Handicap Three horses were left to contest the Hobson Handicap,' Owairaka (£544), being at odds-on, and Glena Bay £305) at a fine price. They were going little better than a good walking pace over the first half-mile, Bizarro leadinar Owairaka. At the distance the three runners were in line, and then Owairaka pushed his head in front, but Glena Bay’s finishing effort was too much for him. the Waikato gelding winning by a neck, with Bizarro over two lengths back. Glena Bay showed surprising dash considering it was only a sprint home. Owairaka’s 71b. penalty was just sufficient to bring about his defeat.
