EVENTS AT CHELTENHAM There were 300 entries in the North Shore primary schools’ swimming gala, conducted at Cheltenham Beach on Saturday afternoon, by the North Shore Swimming Club. The Herbert Smith Trust Shield for aggregate points in all classes was won by Vauxhall School (52 points). Devonport (21 poihts) was second: Takapuna (15) third; other scores being St. Leo’s, 9; Stanley Bay, 8; and Belmont 8.

R. ASHBY’S WIN

FINE SWIM IN HARBOUR RACE MOLLOY SHIELD EVENT The Ponsonbv Club’s annual harbour swim for the Molloy Shield was won in a close contest on Saturday by R. Ashby, with W. J. Stevens second. and J. Beattie third. Ideal conditions prevailed for the race, which was held over a triangular course in St. Mary’s Bay, the swimmers starting and finishing at the Shelly Beach Baths. Foster, the veteran Ponsonbv swimmer. had a lead of about 300 yards when the second man started, but at half a mile Gunn had closed up on him. with Beattie. Hogg and Bassett about 50 yards behind, and Lockie 20 • ards farther back. Beattie took the lead when a mile was covered, with 1 he backmarkers. Ashby, Hyauiason, Stevens, and Smith coming up stead-

ily. Cunnold retired at this stage of the race. Ashby and Stevens, swimming together, continued to gain on Beattie, and at the western wall turn Ashby had a lead of live yards from the two others, who were now together. In an exciting sprint over the last 200 yards to the rope Ashby staved off a determined challenge by Stevens, to win by ten yards, with Beattie three yards farther back. Hyauiason and Smith finished close together, gaining fourth and fifth place respectively. Fastest time for- the race. 42min 40 sec, also went to Ashby, with Stevens second and Smith third on the list. The shield was won last year by J. Ansell, J. Enwright gaining fastest time.
