WELCOME TO MINISTER
VOLUNTARY WORKER’S OFFER GREEN LANE CHURCH SOCIAL Greetings g,to church and minister were received from all parts of New Zealand at a well-attended social held in the Green Lane Congregational Church last evening, to welcome the newly-appointed minister, the Rev. George Jackson. These included a message from Sir George Fowlds, who was on a visit to Wellington. The growth of the church from the time when, 21 years ago, a Sunday School was begun in a hcruse at Green Lane, was outlined by Mr. Jackson. The building had been erected many years ago on the present site, a gift of the late Mr. Ebenezer Wood. Among the ministers had been the Revs. E. A. Bridger, TI. J. Ralph, Ivan S. Stebbins ancl A. A\ r . MacMillan. Last year, when in charge of a community mission in Dominion Road, Mr. Jackson secured a position in the city which enabled him to carry on the mission without stipend. Owing to the financial position of the Green Lane Church, he offered to serve as pastor without salary on his appointment there. “Although I am an ordained minister of the Congregational Union, with full pastoral charge of this church, I am in precisely the same position as any other man who worships here,” said Mr. Jackson. “I have to earn my living in the City, and can devote only the voluntary margin of my time to the work here.” He appealed for help from all, as by this alone could the church be a success.
