THIEF ARRESTED ON WHARF
FINE OF £2 IMPOSED Arrested on the wharf as he sauntered along with a parcel of stores from the Kaitoke, John Williams was fined £2 at the Police Court this morning for theft. Williams, a fireman, aged 47, pleaded guilty to the theft of stores valued at 4s, belonging to the Union Steam Ship Company. There was a second charge concerning stores valued at ss ( 9d taken on the same day. “Is he a member of the crew 7” asked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Chief-Detective Hammond: .No, but he was with a member of the crew when he was caught by the gatekeeper on the wharf. is nothing known against the man. Default of the £2 fine was fixed at seven days’ imprisonment, and accused was given 24 hours to find the money.
