ANTS STOP SAILING RACE

CONSTERNATION AT NARROW NECK Flying ants made their appearance in the vicinity of Narrow Neck yesterday morning and made their presence felt in no uncertain manner. The Wakatere Canoe Club was holding a race off the beach when the flying pests arrived. One round of the race had been completed, but the ants were so assiduous in their attentions to the uncovered portions of the young racers’ anatomy, that each crew promptly dived into the water, and the race was declared off. On the beach, the ants started to feed on bathers and picnickers. Those' in bathing suits after feeling the stings of the ferocious visitors promptly sought sanctuary in the sea. Women made sudden and surreptitious dives at various portions of their clothing and then fled precipitately to the bathing-sheds lor closer investigation of the cause of irritation. After about an hour the unwelcome visitors disappeared, leaving many with fierce wounds to bewail their arrival.
