AMATEUR ATHLETICS
PAPATOETOE TO STAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS CLUB’S AMAZING GROWTH It is many years since a club affiliated to the Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre has been allocated an Auckland provincial championship, but at the last meeting of the centre, held on Tuesday evening, it was unanimously decided that the halt-mile provincial championship be staged at the Papatoetoe Club’s meeting, to be held on April 5. Glowing compliments were paid by the members of the centre to the very efficient manner in which the officers of the club have conducted the meetings. The first carnival of this enterprising suburban club was held on November 2, 1929, and another was held early this year. The final meeting will be held on April 5. In addition to these Saturday afternoon meetings, weekly evening meetings have been stageu, in which keen interest has been displayed by both competitors and spectators. To date 58 events have been disposed of, and by the end of the season it is expected that 72 events will have been decided, during which 158 trophies will have been distributed. The majority of amateur athletic clubs have great difficulty in the matter of finance, and a crusade of begging is launched to provide the trophies. This club has taken up the attitude that it will ask for nothing for nothing, and up to the present all trophies have been bought from the club’s funds, and these compare more than favourably with anything distributed by other clubs. The club has at present a double-figure credit balance.
