HUNTLY SCHOOL OF MINES
ANNUAL MEETING HELD From Our Oic.x Correspondent HUNTLY Friday. The annual general meeting of the Huntly School of Alines was held last evening. Mr. F. Harris presided. Considerable interest was shown as two notices of motion had been tabled that the school be disbanded, and that it.be vested in the Huntly Town Board. . .The balance sheet showed a bank overdraft of £126 7s lid, which, it was explained, was caused through the various coal companies not paying in their proportion of the moneys due to the school. This, with the Government subsidy, left the finances weak. The representatives of the coal-mining companies held that they knew nothing of the financial position, and resented the imputation ihat they were unsympathetic to the cause; in fact, they took keen interest in the school.
The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. William Barclay; secretary, Mr. J. Watson: auditor, Mr. R. English: council, Messr?. Cold well, George, Harris, G. Smith: mine managers of Taupiri, Pukemiro and Glen Afton mines, and two representatives of the students at the school. Reference was made to the good work of the director of the school. Mr. J. M. Geddes, and the excellent results of the examinations. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring chairman, who had been a member for the pasi; 16 years. The classes will reopen in March, and it was decided to hold -.he next meeting of the council in the second week of that month, when in all ability an assistant will be appointed to the director. The Glen Massey and Waikokowai miners have signified their intention of linking up with the classe?. Both notices of motion -regarding disbanding were withdrawn
